Adventure Holidays – Something to Suit Every Taste
By Alan Rivers of Rivers Travel
The pioneers of early travel who plied their trade in the nineteenth century, would have been amazed if they could have seen the fruits of their labour. These intrepid explorers spent months in preparation, then months at sea travelling to the starting point of their adventure, and probably a year in their destination. They needed large sums of money, many resources and an army of bearers to carry their equipment. Then the hard work started. These adventurers would make their way through dense jungles fighting malaria, or drive a team of huskies across the frozen tundra wastes of Northern Canada, or try and find the source of the Nile. Now Honeymooners can cross a desert by camel train, and backpackers can walk the Pampas of Argentina living like Gauchos in their romanticised lives. Groups of Seniors can now travel to Peru and walk on Machu Picchu and a family can go canoeing on a remote river. How far we have travelled! Many travel agents and tour operators have adventure travel as a significant part of their portfolio. These specialists already have the resources in place in countries as diverse as India and Brazil. They have tour guides and team leaders who are local men and women with a great knowledge of the indigenous culture. They are able to offer a tremendous travel experience to groups and single travellers who are looking for adventure. Adventure travellers these days are aware of a regions ecology, they are looking for a new experience, they share the heartbeat of culture they are visiting. Todays adventure travellers do not just seek their own pleasure, but want the local people to benefit from their stay. Those on adventure tours are generally responsible travellers. You can start an adventure holiday in your own country by doing something new. Start in a small way. Do a challenging activity for just one day - a balloon ride, or a kayak trip down a local river. If you want to trek through the foothills of the Alps, start with a walking holiday through your local hill ranges, or across the moorland and dales where you live. Build your confidence and your fitness, then your enthusiasm will grow. Adventure holidays are for all age groups. You can find an adventure tour to suit all abilities. These tours are for those who enjoy a new challenge. Group tours consist of ten or fifteen people, so it is a social experience as well as a learning experience. There can be no holiday experience that offers the same level of interaction with like-minded people. Another advantage of an adventure holiday, is that you can go at any time of the year. The weather may even provide the challenge. Travel is so easy now that you can leave home and be settled on another continent in 24 hours or less. You can travel from Springtime to Fall, or Summer to Winter, in less than a day! Do those old travellers still have something to teach us? Some of those old methods are still useful. You still need to prepare to get the best results. Save your money, do your homework, read your books, and now we have the benefits of the world wide web. You can even book your adventure online if you want to, but the experience of a good tour operator can make all the difference.
